The Jefferson High Girls Swim team edged out last year’s regional champs Fairmont Senior High on Saturday at the Region II championship held at the Shepherd University Wellness Center.
Jefferson, which won its fifth regional title, scored 100.50 points to Fairmont’s 100. Washington was third with 81.50 points.
The top three finishers in each event qualified for the state meet, which will be held in Morgantown Feb. 20-21. There were also wildcard berths awarded Sunday morning after the other regional berths were situated.
Jefferson began the meet on a positive foot with a win in the 200 yard medley relay. The team of Sierra Knott, Isabella Tuzzio, Kate Hefner and Addie LaBombard swam to a time of 2:04.86. Washington’s team of Kaylyn Wallace, Leah Goben, Anabella Cerasoli and Amber Simpson finished in fifth place with a time of 1:16.44.
Knott added two first place finishes, the first in the 50 yard freestyle and the other came in the 100 yard backstroke.
Knott finished with a time of 25.01 in the 50 freestyle. Washington’s Cerasoli (27.81) was fourth and her teammate, Simpson was seventh with a time of 28.46. Jefferson’s Sera Ann Hawley (28.60) rounded out the scoring with an eighth-place finish.
In the 100 yard backstroke, Knott swam to a 1:06.91 time to lead the field. Washington’s Tayler Pillo (1:10.88) was fifth and Jefferson’s Alicja Urbanczyk (1:18.49) was seventh.
Jefferson’s strong showing in the relay events garnered the Cougars a lot of team points, which proved crucial in winning Saturday’s meet.
Jefferson’s team of Tuzzio, Sofija Lotze, Hefner and LaBombard finished second in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:14.60 and Washington’s team of Lewis, Wallace, Goben and Pillo finished less than a second behind (4:15.21) in third place.
Washington’s team of Simpson, Pillo, Lewis and Cerasoli swam to a time of 1:50.52 for second place in the 200 freestyle relay. Jefferson’s team of Hefner, Lotze, LaBombard and Knott were third with a time of 1:50.83.
Hefner was second in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:09.21. Cerasoli (1:11.31) was third and Tuzzio was fourth with a time of 1:12.36. Jefferson’s Allison Bennett (1:30.22) rounded out the scoring with an eighth-place finish.
In the 200 yard freestyle, Wallace was third with a time of 2:13.94 and Lewis (2:17.50) was fourth. Jefferson’s Lotze (2:25.89) added points for the Cougars with a sixth-place finish.
Tayler (2:34.32) took third place in the 200 yard IM. Jefferson’s Amanda Livingston (2:36.73) was fourth and Tuzzio was fifth with a time of 2:41.00.
Washington’s Lewis (1:01.96) was third in the 100 yard freestyle. Hawley and Simpson tied for sixth place (1:05.30,) each picking up 2.5 points for their team.
Wallace (6:08.64) was fourth in the 500 yard freestyle. Lotze (6:45.18) added points for the Cougars with a seventh-place finish.
Livingston (1:18.41) was third in the 100 yard breaststroke.
