The Jefferson swim teams finished the regular season at 18-1 apiece in dual meets with a victory at a four-team meet held at the Shepherd University Wellness Center on Saturday.  Their next stop: Regionals, followed by the state championship meet.

Jefferson’s boys defeated Spring Mills 66-28; Martinsburg 76-13 and Hedgesville 69-24. The Jefferson girls beat Spring Mills 66-28; Martinsburg 69-24; Hedgesville 76-17.

Saturday’s regionals will be held at 11 a..m. at the Shepherd University Wellness Center and will include teams from Washington, Jefferson, Musselman, Martinsburg, Hedgesville, Spring Mills, Hampshire, Fairmont Senior, East Fairmont, North Marion and Doddridge County.


Jefferson won first place in nine of the 11 events.

The only athlete at the meet to win first place other than a Jefferson swimmer was Spring Mills’ Noah Siegrist, who won the 200 yard IM and the 100 yard butterfly.

The Cougars started their dominating run with a first place by their ‘A’ team [Cavin Davis, Zackary Bishop, Chris Turner and Chris Pfaltzgraff] in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:56.54, less than second faster than Spring Mills.  Jefferson’s B team [Zach Pfaltzgraff, George Struthers, Max Hawley and Justin Gotlieb] was fourth with a time of 2:11.62.

Connor LaBombard (2:05.70) kept things rolling for the Cougars with a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle. His teammate, Bishop (2:07.82) was second.

Turner won the 50 yard freestyle for the Cougars with a time of 23.45. Davis was fourth with a time of 25.20.

Turner (52.02) then followed up with a victory in the 100 yard freestyle. Teammate Gotlieb was fifth with a time of 1:00.43.

LaBombard (5:52.48) won the 500 yard freestyle. Teammate Chris Pfaltzgraff was third with a time of 6:46.78.

Jefferson’s ‘A’ team [Bishop, LaBombard, Davis and Turner] won the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.50. The Cougars’ ‘B’ team [Max Hawley, Zach Pfaltzgraff, Matt Bandler and Matt Lowe] were fifth with a time of 1:55.45.

Davis swam to a 1:10.45 finish to win the 100 yard backstroke. Zach Pfaltzgraff (1:15.82) was third.

Bishop won the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.98. Struthers (1:24.75) took fourth place.

Jefferson dominated the 400 yard freestyle relay, finishing first and third places. The ‘A’ team [Chris Pfaltzgraff, Hawley, Gotlieb, LaBombard] swam to a time of 4:12.24. The ‘B’ team [Evan Pearson, Matt Lowe, Matt Puzzini and Bandler] finished with a time of 4:23.80.

Chris Pfaltzgraff finished second in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:33.96. Zach Pfaltzgraff was third with a time of 2:44.93.

Hawley (1:13.05) was third in the 100 yard butterfly and Bandler (1:21.01)was fourth.

AT SHIPPENSBURG, PA: The Jefferson boys picked up a 104-63 victory at Shippensburg Pa. on Thursday night. Turner won the 50 freestyle (23.48) and the 100 freestyle (52.52). Bishop won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.00 and the Breaststroke (1:10.37).  Labombard won the 500 yard freestyle (5:51.35) and Davis won the 100 yard backstroke (1:07.57).

The Cougars’ team of Bishop Chris Pfaltzgraff, Labombard and Turner won the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.48.  And their team of Davis, Bishop, Labombard and Turner won the 400 freestyle relay (4:04.59).  


Jefferson [Sierra Knott, Gigi Brown, Kate Hefner and Addie Labombard] won the 200 yard medley relay to start the meet with a time of 2:07.88.

The victory was the first of five first-place finishes for the Cougars on Saturday.

Knott followed up with a first-place finish in the 50 yard freestyle. Her time of 26.14 beat out second-place Maggie Denton (Spring Mills) by nearly three seconds. Jefferson’s Sera Ann Hawley (30.06) was fourth.

Hefner (1:11.73) then edged out teammate Isabella Tuzzio (1:12.29) for first place in the 100 yard butterfly.

Jefferson continued its roll when Knott (1:00.39) won the 100 yard freestyle. Hawley (1:09.96) followed in third place.

The Cougars dominated the 200 yard freestyle relay with a first and third place finish. The first-place team [Tuzzio, Sofija Lotze, Hefner and Knott] had a time of 1:54.87. Jefferson’s third-place team [Hawley, Amanda Livingston, Natalie Marrs, Labombard] swam to a 2:03.81 finish.

Jefferson continued its dominance in the relay events with a first and third-place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay.  Its first place team [Tuzzio, Lotze, Livingston and Hawley] had a finish of 4:41.46. The Cougars’ third place team [Alicja Urbanczyck, Clara Bennett, Marrs and Brown] had a time of 5:02.70.

In the 200 yard freestyle, Lotze was third (2:27.92) and Labombard (2:35.98) was fourth.

Jefferson swept second and third places in the 200 yard IM. Hefner (2:46.67) was third and Livingston (2:48.14) was fourth.

The Cougars took third and fourth places in the 500 yard freestyle with Lotze (6:49.05) taking third and Labombard (6:53.53) finishing fourth.

Tuzzio (1:14.84) was second in the 100 yard backstroke, while teammate Urbanczyk was third with a time of 1:18.38.

Livingston (1:23.19) was second in the 100 yard breaststroke and Brown (1:28.21) was third.

AT SHIPPENSBURG, The undefeated Greyhounds (10-0) handed Jefferson their first loss of the season. Jefferson’s 400 yard freestyle relay team of Hefner, Lotze, Tuzzio and Knott won first place with a time of 4:25.34.
