SHENANDOAH JUNCTION – The Cougars started out with three runs in the first before finding their groove in the third inning, pulling away from the Patriots for a 13-3 win.
The first runs of the game for the Cougars came off the bat of Cullen “Bear” Horowicz on a fly to center field, bringing in Hayden Stang and Cory Daly. His hit put Zac Rose on third, who made it in on a wild pitch by Sage Meiling.
Quiet in the second inning, the Cougars allowed two Patriots to score in the top of the third – first off a wild pitch on a 1-1 count, followed by Jordan Ray coming in on Jacob Chadwick’s sac fly to Stevie Lee in center field. Jefferson responded with seven runs capped by a bases-loaded-home run over the right field fence.
The Cougars would close the game out with three runs and allowing one to Washington.
Lee led the Cougars at the plate going 1-4. He had two runs and five RBIs. Other big hitters included Horowicz (2-3, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Mason Lantz (2-2, 1 R, 1 RBI).
Luke Payne took the win for Jefferson, pitching four innings and giving up two earned runs and one walk. He struck out five, throwing 40 strikes through 57 pitches and 17 batters faced.
Meiling picked up the loss for Washington. He threw three innings, giving up nine earned runs and five walks while logging four strike outs. He threw 41 strikes through 890 pitches and 23 batters faced.
