Both Shepherd University basketball teams are now into their NCAA Division II required breaks before resuming play on Friday, Dec. 30.
The Rams men headed into the break with a 54-52 win at Clarion on Monday, Dec. 19. The Shepherd women lost at Clarion in the early game of the PSAC doubleheader that same day, 67-48.
Both Shepherd teams return to action on Friday, Dec. 30, hosting University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, beginning with the women’s game at 5:30 p.m. Shepherd’s men are 6-4 overall (3-1 PSAC). The Lady Rams remain winless through nine games.
For Shepherd’s men, Daniel McClain-Corley provided a good scoring punch with 16 points. He also had six rebounds. Jon Preston had 11 points with five rebounds. Phillip Jordan added nine points, six rebounds and three assists.
The game remained close, with Shepherd leading at halftime, 28-24. Neither team led by more than six points during the game. With the score tied at 49, with 36 seconds left in the game, McClain-Corley nailed a 3-pointer, giving Shepherd a 52-49 lead. McClain-Corley helped clinch the win with a pair of foul shots with eight seconds left on the clock.
Shepherd’s defense forced 13 Clarion turnovers. The Rams shot 39 percent from the floor.
Turnovers continue to plague the Lady Rams. Shepherd committed 19 turnovers in the loss to Clarion.
Sydney Bolles had 14 points and nine rebounds for Shepherd. Meghan Shipley had eight points with four steals for the Lady Rams. Cara Minor had nine rebounds for Shepherd. Neresha Miller had seven.
Shepherd defensive end Kyle Smith is a nominee for this year’s Cliff Harris Award, presented to the nation’s top small college defensive player from Division II, Division III and NAIA-member schools.
Smith led the Rams with 60 tackles (33 solos) this season. He also recovered a fumble and blocked a kick.
The Harris award winner will be announced on Friday, Dec. 30. The winner will be honored at the Little Rock Touchdown Club’s annual awards banquet on Friday, Jan. 13. The Little Rock Touchdown Club sponsors the Cliff Harris award.
