AIKEN, S.C. – USC Aiken closed out their weekend home series over the Rams with a 3-0 shut out. Aiken (6-1) overcame the Rams (0-6) 7-5 on Friday, 10-5 on Saturday and closed Sunday up 11-3. 

Game 1

After a quiet first inning, Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the second when Jared Carr reached base on an error and later scored on a double from Dalton Stewart. Stewart later scored on a ground out by Trenton Burgreen. 

The Pacers scored a run in the second and another in the third to tie the game.

USC Aiken found a 3-2 lead in the fifth on an RBI-single from Alex Mills. Shepherd responded with a pair of runs in the sixth to take a 4-3 advantage. 

The Pacers scored two runs in the bottom of the frame on a solo homer from Luke Leisenring and an RBI-single from Sean McQuillan.

After USC Aiken added a run in the seventh, Shepherd scored in the eighth when Burgreen took a hit-by-pitch and later scored on an error.

The Pacers took a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the eighth behind as Philip Wachter drove in a run on a sacrifice bunt.

Doyle led the Rams with a pair of hits, including a double. Leisenring went 4-for-4 with three runs scored to lead the Pacers.

Jon Yarbrough (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K, 1 BB) (1-0) earned the win with Henry Cartrett (1.1 IP, 0 R, 3 K, 1 BB) gaining the save. Senior starter Ryan Potts (5.2 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) (0-2) took the loss for the Rams.

Game 2 

On Saturday, Shepherd took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first off of a single by junior outfielder Brenton Doyle who later scored on a wild pitch. The Rams added another tally as senior first baseman Justin Smith singled and scored on a triple by Carr. The Pacers answered back in the bottom of the frame with four runs. 

USC Aiken added single runs over the next four innings and plated two runs in the sixth on a two-run single by McQuillan to take a 10-2 lead.

Shepherd completed the scoring with three runs in the eighth. Senior catcher Eddie Nottingham smacked a two-run single while sophomore Daniel Keer had an RBI-single.

Doyle went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Rams.

Joey Smithers and Conner Durden each had three hits for the Pacers.

Zach Rafuse (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 1 BB) (2-0) closed the win for the Pacers. Sophomore pitcher Adam Miller (4.0 IP, 11 H, 7 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams. 

Game 3

USC Aiken started out hot on Sunday, quickly taking an early 11-0 lead at the end of the fifth. 

Shepherd would finally bring in a pair of runs in the eighth when Smith belted a solo homer. Keer would then reach base on error, and later found home on a sac fly by Stewart. 

The Rams added another run in the ninth as sophomore outfielder Kendall Jordan reached on an infield single and later scored on a sac fly by Smith.

Garvin Alston Jr. (5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 6 K, 1 BB) (1-0) gained the win for the Pacers while Mitchell Wilson (3.1 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 6 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams.

Shepherd returns to action on Saturday when they host Tiffin for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field in Shepherdstown. They finish up their series with a noon game on Sunday. 

The Dragons have yet to play a game this season, but ended 2018 with a 16-29 overall record.
