CHARLES TOWN – While the Classic and the Cavada took center stage on the recent West Virginia Breeders Classics night card here on Oct. 9, a number of other state-bred runners of both genders and all ages delivered commendable efforts in the bevy of $75,000 stakes on the undercard. 

But it was jockey Arnaldo Bocachica, trainer Jeff Runco and owner David Raim who were easily the biggest winners on the night.

In the opening race on the card, the $75,000 Vincent Moscarelli Memorial for two-year-old colts and geldings, Run to Daylight (Arnaldo Bocachica) rallied from well off the pace with a strong move entering the far turn then overhauled stablemate Amidships to score by two lengths as the 3-5 favorite.

A juvenile son of Runhappy trained by Jeff Runco for owner David Raim, Run to Daylight has now owns all three of his lifetime starts and banked just shy of $100,000 after getting the 6½-furlongs in 1:20.90.

One race later in the $75,000 Triple Crown Nutrition BC for two-year-old fillies, The Sky Is Falling (Bocachica) rallied from well off the pace and easily overhauled 1-5 choice Fancy Her Up for a two-length score as an overlooked 9-1 shot.

A freshman daughter of Cupid trained by Runco for Raim, The Sky Is Falling notched her second win in three starts and doubled her earnings past $55,000 by getting the 6½-furlongs in 1:22.18.

Then one race later in the West Virginia Dash For Cash, Hypothesis (Jose Montano) lived up to his role as the 6-5 favorite when he rallied from just off the pace to score by two lengths. A four-year-old Algorithms gelding trained by Crystal Pickett for owner Jill Daniel, Hypothesis recorded his fourth win from nine starts this year and now owns a 10-5-1 slate and nearly $320,000 banked from 22 career outings by getting the 4½-furlongs in 52.08.

One race later in the $75,000 West Virginia Lottery BC, Social Chic (Boacachica) lived up to his role as the 4-5 favorite when he rebuffed the McKee-trained entry of No Change and Youthinkthatsfunny for a neck score. A sophomore son of Upstart trained by Runco for owner Daniel Ryan, Social Chic recorded his second straight stakes, fourth win in six starts this year and he now owns a 6-3-0 slate and $175,000 banked from 11 career tries after getting the seven panels in 1:27.06.

Then one race later in the $75,000 West Virginia Tourism BC for three-year-old fillies, Door Buster (Bocachica) just lived up to her billing as the 3-5 favorite when she saved ground down the backside and through the far turn, angled out with clear sailing and wore down Moonlit Shadow for a neck score.

A sophomore daughter of Speightster trained by Ollie Figgins III for owner Jay Reese, Door Buster notched her second straight stakes tally and now sports five wins and nearly $200,000 banked from 11 lifetime tries after getting the seven furlongs in 1:28.45.

One race later in the $75,000 Onion Juice BC for older males, Penguin Power (Bocachica) just lived up to his billing as the 1-5 favorite when he overcame post 10 to gain command through the clubhouse turn, set the fractions amid little pressure and held sway through the lane for a three-length score over Fancy Concho and Boaster.

A six-year-old Fiber Sonde gelding trained by Runco for Raim, Penguin Power recorded his third-straight triumph in the Onion Juice and now owns 14 wins and $350,000 banked from 22 lifetime outings after getting the seven furlongs in 1:26.80.

Then in the Saturday night finale, Stowe Angel (Bocachica) prevailed as the even-money favorite in the $75,000 Roger Ramey Distaff for fillies and mares.

Trained by Runco for Raim, Stowe Angel notched her second win from seven starts this year and now owns a 7-4-1 slate and lifetime earnings of over $180,000 from 14 career tries after getting the nine furlongs in 1:55.99.
