Ruth Lee Scarlett Miller,

100 years old, peacefully passed away from this worldly life to life eternal on Sunday, May 2, 2021 with her daughter at her side.

Born February 16, 1921, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of Charles “Jack” and Emma Scarlett.

She attended Burke Street Elementary School in Martinsburg and graduated from Martinsburg High School, Class of 1938.

She attended Mary Washington College for three years before marrying her beloved husband, Charles H. Miller, in 1941. She then placed her education on hold to raise her family.

During those years, Mr. and Mrs. Miller lived in a number of places, including Florida and North Carolina, while Mr. Miller pursued a career in professional baseball. The Millers returned to Martinsburg a few years later while Mr. Miller played for the Hagerstown Suns baseball team.

In 1955, Mrs. Miller returned to college, where she graduated in 1957 with a degree in elementary education. Soon after, she began a teaching career that spanned 25 years. She taught at John Street, Hedgesville and Berkeley Heights Elementary schools.

Mrs. Miller loved, reading, traveling and spending time with her cherished children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She spent many years traveling with her husband and family to Myrtle Beach, S.C, and occasionally spent special trips with her family at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs and at The Homestead Resortin Hot Springs, Va.

She had a love of gardening and flowers, which led her to become a charter member of the Berk-Mar Garden Club and later the Norborne Garden Club.

A lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, she was the oldest living member of the church at the time of her passing.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy M. Gess, and husband Gary; her son, Stephen S. Miller, and wife, Jane; and her son-in-law, Edward “Pat” Dockeney; four grandchildren—Laura E. Rixham and husband, Andy, Dr. Daniel E. Miller and wife, Laurie, Charles G. Miller and wife, Alison, and Cara D. Young and husband Jerry; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob Rixham, Emily Miller, Everett Miller, and Griffin Miller.

Mrs. Miller was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Charles Henkle Miller; a daughter, Nancy M. Dockeney; her parents, Jack and Emma Scarlett; and her brother, John F. Scarlett.

Visitation was held Monday, May 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Ranson.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 11, at 11 a.m. at the Strider Funeral Home. Pastor Allen R. Miller officiated. Burial was in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial remembrances take the form of contributions to the Martinsburg Union Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 843, Martinsburg, WV 25401, or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
