Walter Winston Painter, 88, of Charles Town passed away Friday, Oct. 9, 2020 at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg under the care of their Hospice Program.

He was born Jan. 21, 1932 in Charles Town. He was the son of the late Earl T. Painter and Savilla (Weakley) Painter.

Walter retired Jan. of 1997 from the Jefferson County Board of Education where he had been a Teacher with the GED Program. Formerly he taught at Martinsburg High School, was a Counselor at James Rumsey Technical Institute, and also taught at Harpers Ferry Job Corp.

He was a member of Zion Episcopal Church, Charles Town.

He graduated from Charles Town High School, class of 1950, Shepherd College, class of 1968 and he received his Master’s Degree from WVU, class of 1971.

He served 14 years with the U.S. Marines, member of the WV Adult and Vocational Association, National American Legion and the National VFW Legion.

Mr. Painter received the following commendations: Rifle Marksman Badge, Pistol Expert Badge, Good Conduct Medal and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Doris L. (Kelican) Painter who died April 8, 2010; son, Alan Joseph Painter who died April 4, 1973; sister, Mildred Painter Kamaka and brother, Earl William “Tater” Painter.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2020 at the Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town with The Rev. Dean Lawrence officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to Arthritis Foundation of WV, 1116 Smith St., Charleston, WV 25301 or the VA Medical Center Hospice Program, 510 Butler Avenue, Martinsburg, WV 25405.

Arrangements are by the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.
