Helen L. Atkinson

Helen Louise “Weezie” Layman Atkinson,  81, of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, passed away Wednesday,  September 30, 2020 at Willow Tree Manor Healthcare Center. 

Born September 25, 1939, in Steubenville,  Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Frank Wilson Layman, Sr. and Helen Freeland Layman.  She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Charles Town, WV. Previously she was very active at La Belle View United Methodist Church in Steubenville and at Wintersville United Methodist Church in Wintersville, Ohio.  Over the years she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, sang in the choirs and played hand bells, as well as participated in the United Methodist Women’s units at all three churches. Helen loved to quilt and was a member of the “Renegade Quilters” of the Steubenville area.

Helen was a homemaker and the loving wife of 60 years, of the late Paul Richard Atkinson.  She was preceded in death by her brother, Karl James Layman and wife, Kay.  She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Atkinson Eaton and husband, Bradley, and Janie Atkinson Gaudens, all of Harpers Ferry, one grandson, Zachary Thomas Eaton and girlfriend, Alexandra Martin, of Petersburg,  Virginia, two brothers, Frank Wilson Layman, Jr. and wife, Lorna, of Westerville, Ohio,  and Robert Grant “Bob” Layman, of Circleville,  Ohio, numerous nieces and one nephew.

Services will be private, through Asbury United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life gathering is being planned for Spring 2021, where the family will receive friends in more healthy circumstances.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Women.
