James “Jim” Francis Prentice, 67 of Harpers Ferry, WV passed away, December 8, 2020 at 7 a.m. surrounded by family.

He was born in Put-in-Bay, OH on February 10, 1953. Jim graduated from James Madison High School in Vienna, VA and attended James Madison College, as well as George Mason University. He began his career as a hard rock miner in the construction of the DC Metro System.

In 1986, Jim started his award-winning construction company, JF Prentice Construction, in Oakton, VA which flourished for over 30 years. When he retired, he fulfilled his dream of moving back to his beloved childhood hometown, Harpers Ferry, WV where his father was the first superintendent of the National Historic Park. Jim became the first Harpers Ferry Park Guide in 2013.

He won many accolades related to his passion and knowledge of Civil War and antebellum history.

He is survived by his daughter, Heather Sheaffer (Jeremy), and his sons Danny (Kim) and Jesse (Kristin) Prentice, his former wife, Susan, his grandchildren, Hannah and Logan Sheaffer, Larlyn and McKinley, Eleanor and Florence Prentice, his siblings Mary Anna Prentice, Jerome Prentice, and Deborah Martin, his many nieces and nephews, and a world of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Helen and Joseph Prentice, as well as his brothers Joseph, George, and Eugene.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 11, 2020 at St. Peters Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, WV with Fr. Leonard Smith as the Celebrant assisted by Deacon David Galvin.

Interment was in Harper Cemetery.
