‘This is what democracy looks like’

Posted: Wednesday, June 15, 2016 9:00 am

For 20 glorious minutes I participated in the Democracy Spring demonstration in Washington D.C. several weeks back. Why so briefly? Out of more than 1,300 people, I was the very first one arrested.

Democracy Spring is a movement that was long in the making. It stemmed from the Occupy movement a few years ago. From that movement came an organization named 99rise, which was co-founded by Kai Newkirk and was one of more than 140 organizations that came together on April 11. Besides the plethora of free agents like myself, we saw the likes of Jodie Evens from Code Pink; John Pudner from Take Back Our Republic; Umi Selah from Dream Defenders and Cenk Uygur from The Young Turks. Even Rosario Dawson from Hollywood was there. We the people came together in our nation’s capital in order to express distaste and disgust for the corruption in our government.
