CHARLES TOWN – The Charles Town Kiwanis kicked off #beKindwithKiwanis month Saturday by giving out free hugs and puppy kisses in downtown Charles Town.

The Wright Denny K-Kids and the Charles Town Middle School Builders joined together to hand out Hershey’s Hugs candies with “Be kind” stickers on the bottom and Friends Fur Life Rescue was on hand with a kissing booth where puppiess sat to provide the free kisses.

The kids offered help holding doors, carrying packages, and delivering Hugs to to those who were out and about downtown. Also on this day, a new initiative from the City of Charles Town and the Charles Town Kiwanis was launched.

Last year, Charles Town became a Golden Rule City. One of the components of being a Golden Rule City is promoting kindness throughout the town. This year, the Charles Town Kiwanis embarked on a new project to promote kindness. This project, now being dubbed our “first-annual” is very Charles Town-focused. Through mutual inspiration between the city and the Charles Town Kiwanis, the project “You’ve Been Golden Ruled” was born.

This initiative, unveiled last weekend, seeks to promote kindness and encourage paying it forward. The “You’ve been Golden ruled” cards allow people to perform an act of kindness, then pass a card to the person receiving the kindness. These cards can be tracked by following the “Kindness is Golden” Facebook page at

On Saturday, our WD K-Kids and CTMS Builders gave out over 200 “You’ve been Golden ruled” cards!

If you are interested in obtaining cards to disperse, please email me at Our goal is to have Charles Town established as a Kindness Destination and serve as the epicenter of a kindness movement.

And so far, our businesses are showing incredible support. Sugar Whipped, inspired by #beKindwithkiwanis, has already started their own pay it forward movement. They have created a promotion entitled #cupcakeitforward where they encourage customers to purchase a coffee or cupcake for someone else. When a customer does #cupcakeitforward, they receive stickers that designate what has occurred.

The Charles Town Kiwanis  is also excited to have Wayan Rata at No Tomorrow Tattoo tattooing for kindness in November. We have a little something for everyone, and we hope you enjoy his be kind tattoos at his be kind price. Please call Wayan at the shop at 304-724-1888 to book your appointment.

Our WD K-Kids ad CTMS Builders will help with the Veterans Day ceremony on Saturday November 11th. We have a tentative Kindness Crawl planned for Saturday, November 18th. If you are a business and would like to be included, please contact me at for details.

Sometimes choosing  kindness isn’t easy. Sometimes choosing kindness can be downright difficult. But at the end of the day – choosing kindness will be the one thing you will never regret.
