SHEPHERDSTOWN – The director of the Civil War Institute at Pennsylvania’s Gettysburg College will deliver a free lecture here next month.

Peter S. Carmichael will deliver a talk, “Tracking down a Confederate Deserter after Gettysburg,” at 7 p.m. Nov. 6.

The talk – free and open to anyone – happens at Shepherd University’s Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education.

The lecture is the second in the Moore Center’s Signature Speaker Series.

In addition to directing the Civil War institute, Carmichael also is the Robert C. Fluhrer Professor of Civil War Studies.

Carmichael, 52, taught at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and at West Virginia University before coming to Gettysburg in 2010.

He started his academic career at Western Carolina University and then served as the initial scholar-in-residence at Gettysburg National Military Park starting in 1999.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and completed his graduate work at Penn State, including his Ph.D. in 1996. He’s also co-editor of the Civil War America series from the University of North Carolina Press.
